TO STOP SERIOUS BLEEDING FROM SPUR INJURY WALLINGFORD, Connecticut, July 16, 2007-On the last night of the recent National Federation of Professional Bullriders (NFPB) Rodeo Finals in St. Joseph, Missouri, an advanced new blood clotting product, QuikClot 1st Response™, saved a finalist from an ambulance ride to the nearest hospital – and even allowed him to go on and finish the competition. According to NFPB volunteer medical director Ann Brumback, it was a dramatic moment when the contestant severely lacerated his forearm with one of his spurs during his next-to-last ride. Brumback, who has been a licensed EMT for 12 years – eight of them assisting the NFPB – and who often provides medical supplies for the group at her own expense, grabbed a packet of QuikClot 1st Response™ from her medical kit and went to his aid. She had been given samples of the product at a recent EMS Expo by Z-Medica representative and trainer Robert Huebner who, as an EMT himself, appreciated her volunteer service to the NFPB. “The wound was bleeding very hard because the rider had broken through scar tissue on his forearm,” said Brumback. “It was the first time I’d used QuikClot?, although Bob Huebner had given me some on-the-spot training – and the package directions were clear and simple to follow, as well. It stopped the bleeding like that! It’s an absolutely amazing product that you don’t really appreciate until you see it work!” With the bleeding stopped, the bullrider insisted on taking his last ride. “He rode another bull with the QuikClot 1st Response™ sponge taped to his forearm – and it never bled again,” said Brumback. “This is a type of wound we see often and it’s tremendously reassuring to have a tool like QuikClot? in the first aid kit.” QuikClot 1st Response™ and another, QuikClot ACS+™ are two of the new generation of blood clotting products from Z-Medica Corporation (Z-Medica), a medical products company focused on innovative hemostatic nano-technologies. In these products, QuikClot?, a proprietary mineral substance, is formulated into beads enclosed in a porous surgical fabric. When introduced into a wound, this sponge takes the shape of the injury, conforms to the wound and rapidly stops even the most severe venous and arterial bleeding. The sponge stays in place and is easily removed once the patient is in a medical setting. First developed for the military, QuikClot® is proven to have saved scores of lives on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan. It is in use by first responders, safety and security organizations across the United States, and is the most widely used hemostatic first aid product available with more than one million units deployed worldwide. “It is gratifying to see our product research and development taking QuikClot? beyond its original military and traditional first responder usage to support applications in many other arenas where bleeding is an issue,” said Z-Medica CEO Raymond J. Huey. QuikClot ACS+™ is packaged for use in larger wounds and QuikClot 1st Response™ is for use in the types of wounds generally encountered by first responders. Larger wounds can also be treated by using more than one QuikClot 1st Response™ sponge. The company has just launched a consumer version of these products, QuikClot Sport™ and QuikClot Sport Silver™ – the first QuikClot® brand hemostat formulation with antimicrobial properties.
