What Is QuikClot?
QuikClot® brand hemostatic agent is a breakthrough product that saves lives by rapidly stopping severe bleeding. It is composed of an inert mineral substance that can be formulated and delivered to meet a variety of medical needs and applications. QuikClot® is changing the way we look at traumatic bleeding, by giving the first responder and others, an additional tool they can use to save a life.

How does it work?
QuikClot® hemostatic agent is a molecular sieve, sifting molecules by size. When QuikClot® comes into contact with blood in and around a wound, it rapidly takes in the smaller water molecules from the blood. The larger platelet and clotting factor molecules remain in the wound in a highly concentrated form. This promotes extremely rapid natural clotting and prevents severe blood loss. Additionally, the nano-engineered particles provide key surface chemistry, rapidly enhancing the body's natural coagulation process. The process represents a new approach to hemostasis, which typically involves adding clotting factors rather than extracting elements to halt bleeding.

The flagship product QuikClot® brand hemostatic agent was tested at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS, the military medical school) in cooperation with the Office of Naval Research, the United States Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory and United States Marine Corps Systems Command. Both USUHS and the Navy Medical Research Center performed pre-clinical testing on QuikClot ACS™, an advanced formulation and delivery system of QuikClot®. Trauma surgeon and scientist Dr. Hasan Alam, currently with Massachusetts General Hospital and formerly with the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), was lead researcher.

Z-Medica is funding pre-clinical trials at Hartford Hospital, Hartford Connecticut to explore the use of QuikClot® in trauma surgical procedures. This research is under the direction of Lenworth M. Jacobs, M.D., MPH, FACS. Dr. Jacobs is Director of Hartford Hospital's Trauma Program, and Professor and Chairman of the Department of Traumatology and Emergency Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.
A number of prestigious medical/clinical journals have published QuikClot® research studies and findings.
